Front door-to paint or not to paint?

What color is your front door? The first front door I paid attention to was at the townhouse we rented in Savannah, Georgia. We lived downtown on Habersham square on the first floor. We had a large wooden door with beveled glass, the original hardware, and a mail slot. Then we moved to Texas. It was our first place as homeowners and we had your basic white front door for your basic starter home. After a few months we painted it red and added a brass kick plate, it was a big improvement. We have since stuck with pretty traditional colors: red, black, and white. Our current home is over 100 years old and we have made several updates over the years, some easier than others. When we decided to update the front door we had a lot of ideas which were quickly crushed give that we had 2 options: order a custom door or reframe the entry to be a standard size. Given the age of our home, not much is standard which leaves us holding our breath as to what we might uncover during home improvement projects! We opted to go with the custom door and order a solid mahogany door. We found a beautiful antique door knocker and the rest is history. I can’t imagine ever painting this door while we live here, but I wonder what the next owners might do?

I recently read an article on Apartment Therapy where UK based estate agent company Whitegates examined the most Instagrammed front door colors and here is what they found:

  1. Brown wooden

  2. Black

  3. Green

  4. Blue

  5. Sage

  6. Red

  7. White

  8. Grey

  9. Pink

  10. Yellow
